What the Backpack does

The Backpack is the volume upgrade. The description names it third of the three lines (“Upgrade your warmth, pickaxe & backpack!”), and it decides the answer to the question every run asks: how many kilograms of crystals fit before you must sell?

Official artwork shows the mechanic, not the numbers: crystals carry kilogram weights (96.4 kg and 98.4 kg appear in official images), the character visibly wears the backpack on every run, and the “after” image shows a full backpack of rainbow crystals as the reward for a good run. Exact capacity numbers and upgrade prices are in-game only — treat any site listing Backpack tiers as unverified.

Capacity, weight and run length

Three connected facts define every run:

1. Crystals weigh kilograms. The weight you see above a crystal is what your capacity budget spends — crystal guide.
2. A full backpack ends the mining window. Pace and Warmth stop mattering once nothing fits — sell and reset via the selling guide.
3. Capacity upgrades are income upgrades. More kilograms per run is more Cash per climb, which is more upgrade progress per session.

When to upgrade the Backpack

1. Your runs end with Warmth to spare. You are leaving mining time on the mountain because nothing fits — capacity is the bottleneck; buy the next tier.
2. You mine rich zones slowly. A slow pace with a big budget is fine; a fast Pickaxe with a tiny backpack is wasted pace.
3. You keep abandoning crystals. Leaving crystals behind to stay under the weight cap is the surest sign the next tier pays for itself.

The garden exception

One habit changes the math: crystals parked in the garden become permanent digging luck instead of Cash. A spare crystal costs weight to carry but pays forever. Players who garden deliberately often keep one or two slots of each haul for the garden and sell the rest — capacity upgrades make room for both.
